Whoever said that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life was clearly never in the wedding industry! We all know the long nights and weekends, and the back breaking work it takes to succeed. But doing a job you love in a creative industry that literally brings people’s romantic daydreams to life is still one of the best jobs in the world. Today we’re chatting to Cornwall wedding planner and HiveTribe member Emma Caesar, whose search for a role that she truly loved ultimately led her to launch her bespoke wedding design and planning business, Emma Caesar Weddings. We asked her more about what she’s learned, and how truly loving what she does has contributed to her success.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

I have always adored all things wedding, but I really fell in love with the wedding industry when it came to planning my own – I just loved expressing my creativity! For me, it was all about the fine details and making my wedding stand out from the crowd to create the ultimate guest experience. The day achieved exactly that; the guests are still talking about it now, long after the event! Through my desire for wanting every couple to have an exceptional day their way, Emma Caesar Weddings was born.

Why weddings?

After completing a Business and Finance degree, I embarked on a career in finance but soon yearned for a more creative and rewarding profession. My natural flair for meticulous planning and organisation, my keenness for creativity, my extraordinary attention to detail, and my incredibly hard-working attitude has led me to enjoy a very successful career in teaching. To me, these personal skills are an asset when it comes to planning a wedding so I knew I had something special to offer couples and decided to take the leap into something I loved. I’ve had a wonderful time researching and learning so much about the industry and meeting new people. I’ve never looked back so I know I’m on the right path for me!

What mistakes have you made, and what did you learn from them?

Since I planned my own wedding, I probably thought I knew it all already and tried to do everything by myself! But I soon found there was so much more to learn and there were people to help me. I have trained with the UK Alliance of Wedding Planners, which has been invaluable in gaining a true understanding of the wedding industry, and surrounding myself with other professionals in the industry has led me to build up an abundance of fantastic suppliers, locally and further afield. Now with a wealth of knowledge and a hand picked array of suppliers, I feel more confident and well positioned to help couples create the wedding of their dreams.

What advice would you give someone about to make the leap to being a full-time wedding pro?

If it’s something you truly love then go for it! Anything is possible if you really want it but do think of the business practicalities – I had underestimated the importance and time of pre-launch research as well as the time and expense involved for me to undertake courses/training and set up my business. There was a lot I wanted to do straight away but couldn’t due to finances. My plan has taken a little longer than I anticipated but success doesn’t happen overnight. Each little step is something to celebrate and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved so far.

What support and advice have you discovered, and how has it changed your business?

I’ve learnt so much but a big one for me was knowing how important my brand is, understanding my niche and what it is that makes me different. Right from the beginning, I was so clear in the type of weddings I wanted to create and the clients I wanted to attract but I began to waiver a little and felt a lot of self-doubt, feeling like I should try to appeal to every bride. I learned that this would only weaken my brand message. I’ve striven to gain lots of advice and support in how to showcase what I’m all about and I’ve learnt to stay true to who I am and my niche.

How do you find a work/life balance?

For me, I feel it’s important to map out my goals and strategy, what I want to do and achieve, when by, and how I’m going to do it. Otherwise I take on too much and it turns out to have a detrimental effect on me, my business and personal life. Your time management and work space is important and it’s essential to delegate, prioritise, set boundaries and learn when to say no! Make time for yourself and be intentional with scheduling time away from work.

What’s your definition of success?

For me, success is being happy, loving what I do every day and achieving my goals, no matter how small they are.

What’s your number one tip for new wedding pros?

Do your research and surround yourself with other professionals in the industry who can give you invaluable support and advice. Secondly, if you truly love what you do, and this comes across in your work, then you will see a massive increase to your business growth. You are the energy you want to attract so be confident, happy and successful and you’ll attract those types of clients. Have self-doubt and your clients will doubt you too. Setting small, achievable goals helps me to stay positive and confident.

What’s next for you and your business?

With launching my new website at the start of the year, it’s all about visibility and getting my brand out there! I’d also love to collaborate with more fantastic suppliers in the wedding industry and plan a styled shoot – it’s a wonderful opportunity to see my ideas come together, be creative, experiment and showcase a little of what my brand and I are all about.
