One of the things I’m most excited about HiveLive17, our wedding industry conference on 28th and 29th April 2017, is being able to connect you with some of the most talented and experienced wedding pros in the industry!
Our incredible line-up of speakers are respected business women and entrepreneurs who also understand the struggles of start-up life, ongoing business decisions and dilemmas and will admit to making the odd mistake (or two). This real-world experience is why I’ve invited each of our super inspiring ladies to share their insight and knowledge of working, and running businesses, in the wedding industry with you.
Over the next few weeks we’ll be getting to know each of them a little better, and finding out more about the topics they’ll be helping you with at HiveLive17.
First up is the gorgeous Ceri Olofson of Candour & Polish, a boutique copywriting brand based in South East London. Ceri’s natural way with words combined with her knowledge of marketing and branding, as well as her own background in running a successful wedding business, make her my go-to-girl for copy at the B.LOVED Hive and I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce her to you today…
Please tell us a bit about yourself and your business?
I’m a copywriter trained in old school advertising principles, which means I write copy for all sorts of businesses in a way that is designed to both engage your prospective client and sell your service or product. While I work with a range of industries and clients, from agencies to larger companies, I do love the satisfaction of working with small businesses and affecting huge change through relatively simple changes. A creative though-and-through with hands-on experience in running my own business, I provide marketing and branding support in addition to copywriting. I just don’t believe you can tackle one area of your marketing without looking at the whole picture!
What was it that attracted you to work in the wedding industry?
I’ve been part of the industry for over 6 years with my wedding cake design business Olofson Design. Back then I saw it as a place I could be at my most creative because there was so much scope to design cakes that challenged convention. There’s a huge appetite for new ideas and that makes it an exciting industry that pushes you to be the best you can be. There’s no room for complacency. When I decided I wanted a change of pace and train in copywriting, the hardest bit was leaving behind the incredible network of wedding pros I’d worked with. So now I balance a handful of wedding industry clients with other writing projects!
What are you going to be talking about at HiveLive17?
I’m going to be covering the essentials of writing for business, from how to create content that grabs your client’s attention to how to get them to act and hand over their money. Because I know what it’s like juggling all the aspects of running a business, not to mention never having enough money to invest in marketing, my tips are practical and easy for you to implement.
What is about copywriting and SEO that you think most wedding pros struggle with?
It’s yet another ‘hat’ you have to wear! The truth is, I’ve always loved writing, but even I sucked at writing strategically for my business. It’s something I had to train in and spend time learning to be able to take it up a notch, and time is never something wedding pros have lots of. Once you’ve learned the basic principles you realise it’s easier than you thought and you certainly don’t have to be Shakespeare! But overcoming lack of confidence and paralysis by analysis is half the battle.
What are you most looking forward to at HiveLive17?
It’s so wonderful to share knowledge that I wish I’d known when I was doing wedding cakes. I spent so much time wondering if I was doing the right thing, desperate for someone to talk to. I find it personally incredibly rewarding to be able to say to other wedding pros: “It’s going to be ok, don’t be so hard on yourself, here are some things you can do that will help your brand.” Oh and hearing about all the interesting businesses over cocktails won’t hurt either!
