Let’s face it, being a solopreneur can be a lonely old job.
Sometimes you’re full of fire and ready to face the world all guns blazing, and other times you feel overwhelmed, lacking confidence or even downright intimidated by your own goals. Sidenote: We’re all super hard on ourselves, learn to be kinder to yourself ♥
The important thing to remember is that you’re not alone. We all face the same fears on a daily basis. Oh, and if you’re after a little friendly help and support you should totally check out the #hivetribe!
So as we hurtle through January (seriously, already?!) I’ve put together my tips for 2017 success!
1. Follow Your Dreams
Your dreams are what lead you here in the first place, keep following them and don’t loose sight of the end goal!
2. Make A Difference
In the wedding industry, our aim is to make a difference to the most important day of our clients’ lives. That’s pretty damn special. Making a difference is what makes our industry such a great place, so next time that nightmare brides is sending emails at midnight remember that you’re doing this to make a difference!
3. Be Positive
One of the most important pieces of advice I have been given in business, is to stay clear of negativity. Whether it’s a rant about a client or bitch about a supplier, stay out of it! Keep all your on and offline comments and interactions positive, professional and friendly. And if you really do need a rant, please do it in private!
4. Have Fun!
Running your own business should be fun! This is the life you wanted. Sure, at times the to do list is never ending, but try to remember why you started on this crazy adventure in the first place and find time to enjoy it!
5. Set New Challenges
New challenges inspire and motivate us to achieve bigger and better things. Without them, you business will quickly plateau, or worse.
6. Spend Time with Family
I bet when you started your business, one of the key reasons was to have more time. Family time is important, schedule it in and stick to it – I promise you’ll feel more inspired, and motivated, and you’ll be more productive with the time you have too!
7. Take Time Out
I mean proper time out, just for you. Whether it’s a long soak in the bath with your favourite book, or a spa day at a boutique hotel, make sure you are looking after yourself.
8. Believe in Yourself
No one else will! Belief and certainty in your own success is contagious, so don’t be afraid of telling people how amazing you really are (in a totally non-obnoxious way of course!
9. Don’t Give Up
We all have off days, hell, I’ve had more than a few! But as James Corden says, if you don’t stop trying you can’t fail. Word
10. Prove Them Wrong
This should be my life mantra. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of showing someone, actually I can! Ha!
11. Do What You Love
I’m pretty sure you left your day job because you no longer loved it. Hold on to what you love about your business, and use that to direct and inform all your decisions to make sure you keep the love going.
12. Find Your Tribe
Being a solopreneur can be lonely, but with a support network of like minded people who really get it, you can achieve so much more (Umm… hello #hivetribe!)
There is only one of you, and you are only human. You cannot possibly do everything. So whether it’s getting the kids to make their own beds, the hubby to put the laundry on, or employing an assistant, make sure you’re getting help where you can.
14. Know Your Numbers
Cashflow is one of the biggest killers of start up businesses. It’s not just turnover that’s important, but profit! And when your costs are higher than your income… eek! You’re not a charity, so keep accurate and up to date records of your expenses and income to keep you on track and adjust your plans accordingly.
15. Keep Learning
We are all experts, but we can never know everything! Constantly learning, growing and developing is the key to moving forward. (Check out what’s coming up at the Hive here)
16. Set Clear Goals
Goals are there to motivate us to achieve the things we want in life. The more specific your goals are, the harder you will work, and the easier it is to achieve them!
17. Be Unique
There is only one of you. Fact. It doesn’t matter if there are a hundred, or a thousand, other businesses who do the same thing – no-one does it like you! Find that thing that makes you unique and use it!
18. Stop Bitching
No-one likes a bitch. Nuff said.
19. Trust Your Gut
The only person who gets your business 100% is you. That little voice inside your head is always right. Hell, I wish I’d trusted mine more!
20. Plan Ahead – but not too far
Having a plan helps you to stay on track. I set 3, 6 and 12 month goals and break them down into bite sized chunks on a daily basis so they don’t feel too overwhelming. Little and often, folks.
21. Embrace Your Expertise
Each of us have a talent or skill that lead us to form our businesses in the first place. Mine was design, and the ability to get under the skin of a brand to find out what they’re really about. Find yours, and use it!
22. Don’t Burn Out
Before I left my day job, I was sick. Working 12 hour days in the office, followed by another 6+ at home on the blog left me tired, moody and ill. All. The. Time. Your body knows when you’re doing too much, listen to it. I know you’ve got a to do list longer than your arm, but if you burn out you won’t be able to do anything!
23. Don’t be Afraid to Fail
There’s no shame in making mistakes, or even failure. It’s often the biggest risks that end up with the greatest success. And so what, if it doesn’t work out this time? Take what you’ve learned from the experience and try again!
24. Try Everything – Then Focus
When you first start out in business you have a million and one ideas, and that’s ok! It takes time to work out what you love (styling!) and what you don’t love so much (budgeting!), as you progress and grow your business you can refine and focus your offering.
